The Culprits: Causes of Snoring

So what truly cause snoring. This may be quite a hard-to-answer question when were talking of only one cause. For in fact, there are many basic contributors that all funnel into the greater source of the problem. Medically, snoring is defined as a noise caused by vibration from the airways of the respiratory tract that only appears during sleep.

The big question here is that, why, of all state, do we only experience snoring during restful moments?

Well, while we breathe 24/7, the likelihood that one snores during waking hours is very slim. This is due to the factor that only relaxed muscles can result to snoring.

During sleep, all our voluntary muscles are relaxed. The throat, in the same way as the triceps are relaxed is also resting while we sleep. The fact that tissues in the throat are soft, adds to the eventual output of vibrating sounds.

Once this tissue eases out, the passage of air will turn into a narrower passage. As you can see, narrowed passages causes louder noise because there is more room for friction, thus the vibration.

The loudness of snore is affected by the force of the wind that comes through the air passages. Therefore, when the speed of wind is faster, the snore, in general, is louder and more resonant. This answers why babies are capable of snoring too. However, theirs is not typically considered as snoring but only as mild noises created by the respiratory tract. This must never be ignored though since it may be the early sign that something is jammed in your child’s respiration tunnel.

But while it may appear to both genders at any age, men are more often affected by this condition than women and middle-aged men are most likely to be the victims.

This is due to the reason that men have more fleshy necks since theirs are a bit wider than women’s. This factor combined with the speed of air, the result is most likely to be snoring.

Meanwhile, women by nature produce progesterone hormones. This is known to inhibit snoring, thus they are less susceptible towards the irritable sounds. Lifestyle and health factors are also thought of as culprits of snoring. These include:

§ Allergies that cause clogs in the air paths.
§ Drying of the nasal cavities due to several elements including allergy medications.
§ Cold and flu, this explains why some people only experience snoring when they are sick.
§ Excessive intake of alcohol.
§ Thickening of the tissues along the nasal passage. Often, surgeries done on conditions not directly related to snoring can also contribute to the frequency and intensity of the snores.
§ Abnormally large belly or guts.
§ Irritation of the air passages due to overuse of nasal sprays.
§ Abnormal enlargement of the tonsils or the adenoids.
§ Smoking which causes inflammation in the air passages.
§ Swelling of the thyroid gland or goiter.
§ Blockage of the airflow due to large tongue.
§ Medications that initiate relaxation
§ Obesity
§ Inefficient neural control on the nasal membranes.

Snoring – Natural Therapies

In most parts of the world people are using the traditional medicine as the natural remedy for snoring. The Chinese traditional medicine involves the use of immature bitter orange, bromelain and coenzyme Q10.

Lets start looking at how effective is an immature bitter orange. The bitter orange is very rich and plenty in vitamins C which is an immune booster in the body. That same vitamin also improves appetite and also serves as an ingredient to a number of anti fungal antibacterial and other inflammatory ointments so scientifically and health wise, the bitter orange can be of great use as a home remedy to snores. One should also practice healthy eating in that during dinner people should eat light foods because it is true that heavy dinner will also aggravate the situation and make it even worse. Remember when taking bromelain one should not be on an empty stomach but this does not necessarily say it should be a heavy dinner meal

One should also maintain a better sleeping position to stop putting much pressure on the nasal cavities hence preventing the blockage that will in the end this problem. Sleeping on your side or any other position that is comfortable to you and the body is what should be done.

Having a routine exercise is another natural remedy to snores at night when sleeping. Exercise will keep your body fit and in shape hence mucus will not block any of your noses. Generally good habits and maintaining of the body is the remedy to snoring and so one should also get a remedy that works well, with the person because it might turn out useful in the long run

Stop Snoring – Quick Fix Solutions

There is nothing good like having a peaceful sleep at night without any disturbances and more so especially the ones caused by snoring. Changing the way you normally sleep is also another quick fix solution to stop snoring. It is highly recommended that you sleep on your side more than sleeping on your back. Remember, sleeping on your back makes the tonsils and the tongue to cause vibrations which actually leads to snoring unlike sleeping on your side which actually causes no vibrations.

Moreover, snoring can easily be stopped by raising the bed and more especially raising the head of your bed. This will help cut off the congestion in the throat thus enabling good breathing system. Remember, snoring is more prone to men than women although there are women who snore.

Menopause Night Sweats And Insomnia

Night sweats and are common symptoms of menopause. A night sweat is the same as a hot flash but it occurs at night while you are sleeping. Often times, the sweating is more severe than a regular hot flash. Many women find themselves awake in the middle of the night and find their pajamas, sheets and pillow drenched with sweat.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) will help to lessen the symptoms of night sweats and sleep disturbances (insomnia). However, not every woman is a good candidate for HRT. As a result, it is important for you and your doctor to find alternative ways to manage night sweats and sleep disturbances. Discuss your symptoms with your doctor and check with her prior to beginning alternative treatments.

Below are some tips that I got  from Rhonda Cravey who writes at Bella Online – The Voice of Women, which is an excellent resource for women.

• Use cotton sheets on your bed. The cotton will allow air to flow around your skin better than other fabrics. Cotton will also effectively absorb the moisture from the night sweat.
• Turn the temperature down on your thermostat. The room you are sleeping in needs to remain at a cool temperature. (I keep my on cold – which is hard on the electric bill during summers in Texas)
• Layer the covers on your bed. Ideally, you should have a sheet, light blanket, and heavy blanket. You can remove and add the covers as needed.
• Wear lightweight, cool clothes when sleeping. Avoid flannel pajamas and long night gowns.
• Take a cool shower prior to going to bed.
• Don’t drink caffeinated beverages right before you go to bed. The caffeine will make it difficult for you to go to sleep and stay asleep.
• Avoid alcoholic drinks prior to bedtime. You may fall asleep quickly but the alcohol will make it difficult for you to stay asleep.
• Avoid eating immediately prior to going to bed.
• Avoid exercising right before you go to bed. Exercising will increase your metabolism making it difficult for you to go to sleep.
• Try some relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation.
• Create and follow a bedtime routine. You might try reading or writing in a journal.
• Follow a diet with adequate portions of protein, fiber, fruits, vegetables and grains.

Menopause starts when the ovaries make lesser amount of sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. This will cause changes in the menstrual cycle as well as other physical changes. Normally, menopause is a gradual process that occurs over several years as your body adjusts to the changes of decreased hormones. However, some cancer treatments will cause a woman to go into sudden menopause. These treatments include surgical removal of the ovaries, radiation or certain kinds of chemotherapy which cause the ovaries to become non-functional.

Better Sleep Using Blinds

Sunshine is great but there are times you don’t want to see it especially when you or your little ones need to go to sleep. Sunlight and sleeping are often a bad combination for many people.

Some people are lucky and seem to be able to fall asleep anywhere, anytime with no problem at all. But for most of us daylight keeps our brain alert and unable to relax enough to sleep. This is a particular problem for anyone who works nightshifts who have to sleep during daylight hours.

If you have a baby or young children they often need to sleep during the day. Unless you’ve got a sleepy baby you’ll find that the slightest distraction will keep them awake. And during the summer months persuading young children it’s time to go to sleep when they can still see the sunlight can be a bit of a headache to say the least.

This is why you need a blackout roller blind to help your or members of your family get to sleep even during the day. The dense material will block out the sunlight and create the ideal conditions for sleep. Depending on how the blinds are fitted you can have a darkened room where there’s still a little trickle of light around the blackout blind. Most people don’t mind this as many people don’t actually like to sleep in total darkness.

Others like total darkness, in which case the sides of the blackout blinds will need to be encased in a runner to stop light seepage. This way your room will be completely dark without a hint of sunlight coming in.

Thick curtains may help keep out a lot of the sunlight but blackout blinds are more effective and easy to use. So if the sun is keeping you or your little ones awake you could have blind fitted in only 30 minutes.
